Indigo Opera

the Indigo Opera Theater

founded and led by Gabriel Lochard

Jacob Lawrence , The Life of Harriet Tubman, Panel No. 15 (1940)

The Indigo Opera Theater is a newly forming ensemble dedicated to liberatory and abolitionist theater practice. We honor artists as medicine people, essential to the spiritual health of the community. We improvise, devise and interpret the operatic tradition, from the 17th century to the present day. As we form, the theater is supported by a web of creatives mostly of the African diaspora, and we sing to depth and specificity of our experiences, historically and in the present moment. We connect with the deep history of African diasporic classical artists in our founding base of Chicago.
